Between Doctors Point (10 km from Alexandra) and Shingle Creek (20 km from Roxburgh or 11 km from Roxburgh Dam) lies a 13 km section of river where the trail is not yet completed. This is where you join our Roxburgh Gorge Jet-Boat Trail Experience.
Our jet-boat journey takes you deep into Central Otago’s Gold Rush history, visiting hidden gold-mining sites, stone huts and historic workings that cannot be seen from the trail. Many riders tell us this experience is “the highlight of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail.”
Your jet-boat drivers, Laurence and Simone, are passionate locals with a deep, almost spiritual connection to the Clutha River and its gold-mining past. Their storytelling brings the 1860s era to life on this unique journey through the gorge.
This tour is based on our acclaimed Clutha River Heritage Tour, which first opened this historic section of the river to visitors in 2002.

Clutha River Cruises offers a unique opportunity to explore the isolated reaches of the mighty Clutha/Mata-Au River and experience some of New Zealand’s finest examples of European and Chinese gold-mining history. Along the way, we provide full historical commentary that brings the past to life. The view of the Roxburgh Gorge from the water is even more spectacular than from the trail itself.
Welcome aboard!

The Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail is 34km from Alexandra to the Roxburgh Dam and takes approximately 4 hours to complete. The trail is divided into 2 bike sections (10km & 11km) with a 13km middle stretch which must be taken by boat.
The trail is graded 2-3. It is a smooth ride which is mainly Grade 2, with some steeper hill climbs (Grade 3). This makes it suitable for everyone, including children, to enjoy. Please be aware that there are some steep drop-offs at the side of the track so care must be taken.
Most bikers start at the Alexandra Bridge on the banks of the Clutha (Mata-Au) River. However the trail can be completed in either direction so a start at Clyde (Millenium track) or Roxburgh Dam is also possible.
The trail has been built in 2 biking/walking sections so far. There is an incomplete middle stretch through the narrow and dramatic Roxburgh Gorge which will be a difficult and technical build. In the meantime this stretch of trail is taken by Jet boat which takes bikers (and their bikes) on a thrilling ride through the Roxburgh Gorge with views of gold miners huts and ruins along the way.
2023 Boat Transfer prices are Adult: $140, Child: (under 15 yrs) $70, Child: (under 5) Free. eBike Surcharge: $15. Max Jet Boat Capacity: 15 passengers and 15 bikes
