History & Today

Steve of Clutha River Cruises is an Australian who has resided in Central Otago for 20 years.  On his arrival and struck with a passion for all things gold, Steve started researching the history of the Clutha River gold mining days.  Visits to the little known derelict gold towns of Doctors and Butchers Point, fed his interest in the area.

In Spring 2002 Steve launched Clutha River Cruises, with a hope of opening up the spectacular Roxburgh Gorge for all to enjoy.  Over the years, Clutha River Cruises has grown from its first converted fishing boat, to a luxurious pontoon craft.  On 8th Oct 2010 Steve launched the new gem of his fleet, the Mata-Au, capable of seating 32 pax.

Clutha River Cruises is the only licensed operator on the Clutha River. As well as providing guided heritage tours, Steve now also provides unique personalized tours and parties.  Catering for corporate functions, work parties, family parties, wedding parties and school trips.
